A new website is being created where Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidates in the Nottingham area say why they are Liberal Democrats. I have added an item to the site and I am also reproducing my contribution below:
Actually I joined the SDP started by the Gang of Four. I knew nothing about politics at the time and I was asked to join by David Morton, who was already a local councillor. After a short time the SDP joined with the Liberals and the Liberal Democrats were formed, so I was there at the very beginning. At that point I stood for Broxtowe Borough Council and was elected. That was 24 years ago and now I am also a County Councillor and a Town Councillor. Currently I am the Mayor of Broxtowe and also the parliamentary LibDem candidate for the Broxtowe constituency.
I have really enjoyed being a councillor and Mayor. I love representing people and trying to solve problems and make life better. For me, the “politics” is secondary. It’s important to do what is right. But I have discovered over the years that I really do agree with LibDem values of fairness and equality. It is so important that everyone is valued for who they are and what they do. Everyone had the capacity to contribute to society and community and should be encouraged to do so. Do think about joining the LibDems. I promise you that you will not regret it.
